Overland: A Known Unknown
We think about the month of August all year long. After registration goes on sale on January first there’s not a day that passes where these events aren’t on our mind. Life is busier than ever now and we’re honored to keep these events alive.
Now that The Overland Run, Bike, and TROPHY are under a month away, we wanted to send an update and fuel your sense of adventure.
Imagine following a network of Vermont’s Class 4 town highways—ancient by modern standards, rarely maintained, twisty, sometimes hidden beneath a thick layer of maple-leaf-peat-moss. These roads often predate formal mapping, existing only as “paper streets” or town rights-of-way that towns struggled to track in the ancient-roads mapping process under Act 178. Many of these roads remain legal public highways, yet their condition and even location are unpredictable. IF you've done more than a couple Overland Bikes's, you'll remember how Rich Trail Climb was once ridable back in the day...
These Class 4 roads live in that ambiguous space—public, yet untamed. They may look impassable or vanish altogether, only to reappear beyond a ridge or a farmer’s field. You know they’re out there, but you never quite know what you’re going to get.
Why We Seek the Unknown
This is where we find our heartbeat. Running & cycling courses that are wild in practice, roads & trails that challenge expectations, reveal hidden history, and reward curiosity. One moment it’s packed gravel under big Vermont skies, the next it’s a rock garden, a tractor-sized puddle, or a sunken lane that feels lost to time. We do these events & races because they’re about embracing uncertainty and finding freedom in it.
Adventure Remains Unchanged
We’re excited to step into this year’s Overland Run, Bike & TROPHY with that same spirit. This isn’t about the smoothest dirt or the fastest line... it’s about letting the unknown lead the way and discovering something new each time you run or ride. Overland is an invitation to go beyond what’s charted, to explore Vermont’s hidden public corridors, appreciate all this beautiful state has to offer and to rediscover what adventure really feels like.
